Clean a noisy phone recording: how to make a conversation easier to hear

Identify noise in phone and voice-recorder conversations, compare profile-based and speech-focused treatment, and review the result.

You play back a phone conversation and some words blend into a fan, traffic or room noise. Turning up the volume raises the background too. First identify what kind of noise is masking the voice.

Steady hiss, changing street noise and another speaker are different problems. One aggressive filter can remove quiet syllables along with them.

Listen to the background between phrases

Find a pause and a quiet phrase. A similar background in both suggests trying a learned noise profile. For changing noise, compare Adaptive noise reduction with Speech cleanup. Preserve the original file and avoid repeated lossy re-encoding.

Learn a profile without speech

Open your file and select background noise only. Use Learn in Noise reduction, then select the speech and start Preview with moderate reduction. The threshold is relative to the noise estimate, so do not copy an unrelated recording-level value.

Word endings reveal excessive cleanup

Switch between Input and Result at the same position. Check quiet endings and sibilants. Residual is their difference: intelligible phrases there indicate useful speech loss. Ease reduction or try another processing mode.

A distant speaker may need separate level treatment

After reducing noise, the distant person may still be quiet. Try Gain for a uniformly quiet passage or Loudness Optimize for varying speech levels. Recheck pauses because level treatment can reveal residual noise.

When filtering starts breaking up speech

If every setting makes the phrase choppy, noise and speech may be too entangled. Compare short candidates and retain versions with more background but more intact speech. For important or difficult material, a specialist sample can establish what improvement the source permits.
