Make quiet speech easier to hear in phone and voice-recorder audio
Separate level, noise and voice balance: when gain is enough and when another tool is needed.
The nearby voice is loud while the other person is barely audible through headphones. More volume brings a rush of noise. First distinguish low signal level, excessive background and masking by another sound.
Louder playback does not change signal-to-noise ratio
Gain may be sufficient for comfortable listening when the whole passage is uniformly quiet. It raises noise equally. If the original voice is hard to distinguish from background, compare suitable denoising and speech cleanup first.
Treat quiet passages when speech levels differ
Loudness Optimize lifts quiet audio and uses a peak ceiling. Wait for measurement, then audition the measured suggestion. Tune threshold and noise-floor protection while checking distant words alongside noisy pauses: processing cannot reliably distinguish them.
Investigate muffled sound with targeted EQ
Reducing rumble or making a moderate cut in a boxy range may help. Begin with one EQ band and compare the same sentence. Heavy treble boost cannot restore missing detail and can emphasize hiss.
The complete phrase is the useful check
LUFS and peak readings describe level, not the correctness of words. Compare Input and Result using the complete sentence. Ease treatment if a syllable disappears, even when background sounds quieter.
Preserve alternatives for important passages
Keep the original and a gentler version too. For material informing a consequential decision, a processing log records operations but does not authenticate the content. Specialist examination and preservation of the source are particularly useful.
