When should you choose this tool?

Use Gain when a whole passage is uniformly quiet or needs more headroom before another step. Raising only quiet syllables is a different task, handled by Loudness Optimize.

How it changes audio

Every affected sample is multiplied by the same factor. This alone does not improve the ratio of useful sound to noise. Louder output should not be confused with improved intelligibility.

What do the parameters control?

Gain · dB
−60–60 dB with a slider and exact numeric input. Positive raises, negative lowers, and 0 dB leaves level unchanged. Excessive boost can cause clipping.

Try a short passage

  1. Decide whether to process the whole clip or a passage. Check the active selection before applying.
  2. Start Preview with a small adjustment and check the loudest syllables. When reducing gain, leave room for later processing peaks.
  3. After applying, the history records a reversible step. Before export, listen across the passage boundaries too.

What to listen for

Check for crackle and flat-topped peaks after boosting. If the background also becomes intrusive, address its noise separately.

Limits of the method

This is neither automatic normalization nor a limiter. Lowering a damaged peak does not repair it.

Preview covers a short passage. After applying, review the full treated section; you can undo the step from history.
